Anodic alumina is a dense layer of alumina coated on the surface of aluminium and aluminium alloys. In order to prevent further oxidation, its chemical properties are the same as that of alumina. But unlike ordinary oxide films, anodic alumina can be dyed by electrolytic coloring.


Anodic oxidation can significantly improve the corrosion resistance, surface hardness and wear resistance of aluminium alloys. After proper coloring treatment, it has good decorative properties. The coloring technology of anodic oxide film of aluminium and its alloys can be divided into three kinds: chemical coloring, electrolytic coloring and electrolytic whole coloring. Chemical dyeing is to make use of the porous nature of the oxide film and chemical activity to absorb various pigments to colour the oxide film. According to the colouring mechanism and process, it can be divided into organic dye colouring, inorganic dye colouring, paste colouring, cross-colouring and achromatic dyeing. Electrolytic coloring is the alternating current electrolysis of anodized aluminium and its alloys in aqueous solution containing metal salts. Metals, metal oxides or metal compounds are deposited at the bottom of the porous layer of the oxide film, which presents various colors due to the scattering of light by the electrodeposits. Electrolytic overall coloring refers to that aluminum and its alloys are colored at the same time of anodic oxidation. Its characteristics are that oxidation and coloring are completed in one step. The coloring film has good light resistance, heat resistance, corrosion resistance and wear resistance.
